Trout Accuracy
About this event
Precision casting at ring targets.
Trout Accuracy is the precision event. Four ring-shaped targets are floated in a fan in front of the caster at random distances between 8 and 15 metres — close enough that the test is not strength, but control. The caster stands on a 1.2 × 1.2 m platform and uses a standard 9-foot fly rod with a #5 floating line and a hookless, brightly coloured tournament fly. The leader must be at least 2.5 metres in total, with the final 40 cm no thicker than 0.30 mm — the same fine tippet used in real fishing.
Only the classic overhead cast is allowed. After the judge's signal, the caster drops the fly, false-casts to feed line out, and tries to land the fly inside the rings. The bullseye scores 5 points, the middle ring 3, the outer ring 1. Each target is cast at four times, going left to right — 16 casts in total — within a 5-minute time limit. A maximum score of 80 is theoretically possible but almost never reached. If two casters tie on points, the faster total time wins.
Official World Records
Official World Records have only been tracked since the 2024 World Championships in Åhus, when separate Men's and Women's record categories were first established under the new rules. Earlier results listed below may exceed these values but are not eligible as official records.
