Trout Distance

Trout Distance is the lightest of the distance events: a standard 9-foot single-handed rod and the same #5 floating fly line used in the accuracy event. With such a light setup, raw power is useless — the cast has to be perfectly timed, with tight loops and a clean shoot, to send the line out as far as possible.

The caster works inside a straight lane 5–10 m wide and at least 50 m long, and the cast must land between the parallel side lines to count. The total casting time is 6 minutes, split into two rounds of 3 minutes. The longest valid cast wins, measured from the stand to where the fly comes to rest, rounded down to the nearest half metre. Ties are broken by the second-longest cast, then the third.
